The idea is to focus on connectivity, interoperability and resilience in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region, according to a profile from the 2018 Smart Infrastructure Challenge describing the US-27 Smart Connectivity Corridor project.
The project would involve four cities and one county, linking US 27 in Newport - where it's known as Monmouth Street - to Highland Heights, where it鈥檚 known as Alexandria Pike. Ideally, the project would support new development and provide infrastructure to support tech-related industry.
According to analysis by , this section of US 27, which was once an important interstate highway, has a higher-than-average concentration of elderly people and impoverished residents, with a need for new infrastructure to more strongly connect Northern Kentucky University and its neighboring primary schools to businesses and innovation districts.
The US 27 Smart Corridor was one of four local projects explored in the recent , hosted by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce. Other projects included the Beacon of Hope Business Alliance, selected to develop more effective routes and first/last mile solutions for shuttle service for employers; Paddock Hills-based Monti, Inc., a manufacturer looking to develop employee commute solutions; and the Corryville CDC, Mt. Auburn CDC, and Clifton Heights CURC, which are looking into the development of circulator service between their respective business districts.
