Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was in Florence Friday detailing to fight heroin and opioid abuse. In just a few days he'll be in Cleveland to speak at the Republican National Convention.Here's what he had to say in Florence:
On Donald Trump: "He is an unusual candidate... but you will see a unified Republican Party," the Kentucky Senator told reporters. "We respect the democratic process. It's produced a nominee. He's dramatically preferable to Hillary Clinton, in my view, and so we're going to go forward and win the election and turn this country around."
On Mike Pence: McConnell said he likes Donald Trump's vice presidential nominee, Indiana Governor Mike Pence. "What you'll see in Cleveland next week is a unified Republican Party, ready to go out and win."
On Terrorism: One thing that worries the Senate Majority Leader is terrorism. He believes the U.S. should retake Mosul, Iraq. "I'm not going to immediately say that that will stop lone wolf incidents, but to the extent that most of those incidents are inspired by ISIL, they need to begin to look like losers and not winners."
McConnell says he will continue to advise Trump on a variety of issues. Most of it, he says, will be private.
